I suggest you to find out an answer for your question by trying an experiment with different brands of popcorns, heating them in the microwave and measuring the time they take to pop. Popcorn pops because the water in it is heated by the microwave and turns to steam, which takes up more volume than water, and thus forces out the kernel. The less water there is, the quicker the microwave will heat it up, but the less violently it will pop when it does because there will be less steam.
