We learned a little bit about electoporation today in class and I was very curious to know how a cell can withstand such massive amounts of electricity without getting damaged in any way. Thank you for you time.
Answer 1:

The easy answer to your question is that like anything potentially harmful, whether it be an impact, an electric shock, or even exposure to mutagens or carcinogens, the resulting effects are always dose-dependant. The idea is not to zap the cells to bits (which could easily be accomplished with a large enough jolt), but merely to increase the permeability of the cell membrane by using a series of brief electrical pulses of high field strength.
