Answer 1:
Astronauts who arrive on Mars will need a
lot of supplies to live and it could be very
dangerous if they don’t have everything they need!
There are currently two groups working towards
sending people to Mars: NASA and a privately
funded group called Mars One. The Mars One
mission is a one-way ticket to Mars and they
are trying to start a permanent human settlement
on Mars beginning in 2026.
The reason it is a one-way ticket is because
it takes much less infrastructure to send a
one-way mission than a return mission. If they
wanted to bring people back from Mars, they would
need to send a return vehicle and a way to propel
the return vehicle back into space. Instead, the
one-way ticket means they just have to get people
to the planet and they need fewer materials. The
Mars One mission is planning on sending supplies
to Mars before the crew arrives on the planet,
which means they will know that they have supplies
waiting for them. In addition to the Mars One
mission, NASA has its own plans to send people to
Mars. Instead of a one-way trip to
Mars, NASA is developing ways to send round
trip missions to Mars that last around 1,100
days.
They are planning on sending people to Mars in
the 2030s. This is later than the Mars One group,
but that’s because they want to develop the
technology to bring people back safely from the
planet. I’m not sure exactly what would happen if
their supplies did not arrive on Mars. Perhaps the
astronauts would have
to find a way to use the resources available to
them on Mars? It may be possible that NASA
would be able to bring the astronauts back from
Mars earlier than they had planned in the case of
an emergency like that.
Thinking about sending people to Mars is very
exciting! This is the next step in human
exploration and there is so much we can learn
about our solar system, Mars, and our own planet.
Stay tuned to the NASA website for updates on
the Mars missions. We are sure to see some
incredible achievements in the next 20 years.
I hope this answers your questions!
