Is it a good idea to send people to Mars?
Question Date: 2015-10-07
Answer 1:

Thanks for all of your great Mars questions! Although I’m not an expert on Mars or on any of the space missions, I’ll do my best to answer your questions. You asked if it’s a good idea to send people to Mars. There are a few ways to answer this question. For the purposes of scientific advancement, it is a good idea to send people to Mars. By sending people to Mars, we will learn about the evolution of our solar system and about our own planet’s history and future. Humans on Mars will be able to look for evidence of life on the planet, which will help to answer one of the biggest questions we ask: Does life exist beyond Earth?

Although exploring Mars is a good idea for helping us understand our solar system, it will be dangerous to send people to Mars. There are a lot of things we don’t know about keeping people healthy in deep space, and scientists are working hard to make the trip as safe as possible but there is always a chance that something unexpected could happen. But scientists seem to agree that it’s worth the risk because we can learn so much from the mission. Also, sending people to Mars is the first step to exploring other, more distant planets.

Answer 2:

That depends on what you want the people to do, and how much money you are willing to invest into getting them there and keeping them healthy. With enough money for good space ships, rockets, etc., humans could travel to Mars to do scientific research, and come home to Earth. I have a hard time thinking of any other good reasons to send people to Mars for the foreseeable future, and getting to Mars would be very expensive.

Answer 3:

Sending people to mars would sure be exciting -- they would be the pioneers of a new planet! Imagine being the first group of people to live on mars. However, we're still a long way from making sure it will be safe. We still don't have all the solutions to the challenges of living there, and even the best plans can have errors. We could have the best plan but there will be some new problems that we won't know about until we get there.

There are many scientists and engineers working on this project and the more data they get from mars missions, the better they will be at planning human civilization there.

Is it a good idea? It would be exciting, but we will still have to collect more information before we will be able to do it safely.

Answer 4:

I don't think it's a good idea to send people to Mars. It would cost so much money, and I think there are so many other more important things to spend money on. But I think it would be exciting to see people on Mars. It was exciting to see Mars in 1976, when the first space ship landed on Mars, and it was fun to see the people walking on the moon. So if some people were rich enough to pay for sending people to Mars, I would be excited to watch the people on Mars.
