Why the ocean is clear in the tropical latitudes and more turbid, cloudy, murky off the California coast?
Question Date: 2015-10-22
Answer 1:

This is very much a function of the sediment supply from the land as well as the energy of wave activity that is governed by many factors such as the depth profile, the turbulence associated with waves and tides.

Answer 2:

It's because of all of the algae and other things living in the water. It means that there's more life in the California Ocean than in most tropical oceans.
