Gold is an element which can be found on the periodic table of elements. When it is a solid, gold forms what we refer to as a face-centered cubic crystal structure. Essentially, if you imagine a very small box, a gold atom will sit on each of the corners of the box as well as in the center of each side of the box. This structure then repeats in every direction.
Gold is not actually made by the Earth. Gold is actually only made by dying stars. You can think of stars as power plants. They use hydrogen fuel to make energy in the form of sunlight and heat. However, when a star runs out of fuel, it dies. If a star is large enough, it will create an enormous explosion called a supernova when it dies. Gold is only made during these supernova. The gold we find on Earth, was deposited here at the time the Earth was made from previous supernova billions of years ago.
